My boyfriend and I recently started trying to share our financial lives. This means that we discuss big purchases with each other before making them. When he told me that he was interested in buying a few truck accessories so that it would be better protected when we go to the mountains later this year, I didn’t think much of it. I agreed to the purchase and assumed that a few hundred dollars later it would be done.

Thousands of dollars later, I discovered that perhaps we need to get a little bit better at this whole communication thing when it comes to our money. The fault was definitely on my end for not thinking to ask what a truck would need to go to the mountains.

I had just kind of assumed we were talking about snow tires. He also wanted to get items for the truck that would protect the tires and the surrounding area so we also purchased fender flares and mud flaps. And he was concerned because we’d be driving in areas where people frequently get into accidents because they hit animals on the road so we had to buy a bull bar. And it would be dark on these roads so we had to buy new lights to mount on the bull bar.

Hm, perhaps I should tell him that I want to get “a couple of new things for my closet”!
