I seem to gravitate toward computer geeks — graphic designers and programmers and the like.  Several of my friends are graphic designers — one an old friend and ex-boyfriend from high school, and the other an ex-coworker from a technical writing company we both worked for about four years ago.

There are many avenues for you to explore graphic design in London, but the most popular seems to be the video game industry.  Both of my friends either work in the industry, have worked in the industry, or want to work in the industry — or some combination of the three.  And I guess I know why — it sounds much cooler to say “I do graphic design for video games” than “I do graphic design for company websites and sales brochures.”

However, a lot of graphic designers work in the marketing industry.  Graphic design is needed for company logos, websites, flyers and brochures, and a variety of other marketing pieces.  And there are plenty of people looking for marketing services in Birmingham, so graphic designers in this line of work are sure to be plenty busy.

The nice thing about graphic design is that, like with writing, you can either go into business for yourself or work for a company.  For instance, you might do graphic design for a software company or a marketing company.  Or you could freelance and do graphic design work under contract for anyone who needs it.
