The Importance of a Full Night’s Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important times for our bodies. During sleep, the body recuperates from the activities of one day and prepares itself for the activities of the next. There are two stages of sleep: NREM and REM. NREM stands for non-rapid eye movement and is a period of light sleep. During this period, the body is transitioning from being awake to being asleep, and the body begins the process of relaxing. REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement. The REM phase of sleeping is when dreams occur and is represented by rapid eye movement as well as a rapid heart rate and breathing. Each phase of sleep occurs in cycles during an eight-hour period.
Deep deprivation affects many areas of your body and can result in fatigue, memory problems, and can lead to illnesses such as heart disease and stroke. If your sleep is interrupted by frequent periods in which you do not breathe for up to a minute at a time, you may be suffering from sleep apnea, one of the most undiagnosed and untreated sleep disorders. Sleep apnea is a very treatable disorder. The treatment involves the use of CPAP machines. These machines are used in conjunction with a sleep apnea mask that allows air to be gently pushed into the airways so that a person can sleep without interruption. Since loss of sleep can affect how well the immune system fights illnesses and diseases, a full night of uninterrupted sleep is necessary to maintain good health.
