What is a Pre-Existing Condition?

There is a general feeling of dread that surrounds the term pre-existing condition; though not everyone knows what this is, most people know to fear it.

Basically, a pre-existing condition is any condition that you have at the time you sign up for a new health insurance policy.  This could be either an illness or an injury, and it doesn’t have to be chronic — it is simply pre-existing to the new insurance company, who has never insured you before.

Unfortunately, many FL health insurance companies will refuse to cover you if you have a pre-existing condition, particularly if the condition is serious or chronic.  This is because they don’t want to have to spend a lot of money on you right away, and then potentially have you switch carriers.  That would essentially be a loss to them.

If you have Florida group health insurance, however, the insurance company has more regulations on how they can handle it.  For instance, they might not be able to refuse to insure you outright, but they could refuse to cover any medical expenses related to your pre-existing condition for a certain amount of time, perhaps six months.
