Yoga for Seniors

A few years ago I started practicing Yoga. I had joined a local gym and went to a Yoga class to check it out. I noticed that the Yoga instructors were a bit older than the cardio-pump or body sculpting instructors. I thought Yoga would be cake walk. A few stretches here and there, maybe a balancing move, easy stuff. I quickly discovered my ignorance.
Even though the Yoga instructors were older, they were strong, flexible and more important at peace. I started reading about the benefits of Yoga and discovered that many hospitals, caregiver training programs and senior facilities offer Yoga for rehabilitation and exercise. In addition, many agencies that offer family caregiver resources incorporate calming or meditational exercise in their programs. Yoga strengthens the body and calms the mind. Another great aspect of Yoga is that it crosses the generation gap. In a Yoga class you might see a teenager, middle -aged mom and a senior citizen.
Yoga is not limited to a gym setting. Home care training educators can easily incorporate Yoga into their rehabilitation program. Yoga requires no special equipment and the basic moves are easily to learn. Yoga is a great form of exercise where age does not matter.
