Lake Ontario is an Energy Source

Believe it or not, several meters below the surface of Lake Ontario is an amazing flow meter that serves as an integral part of converting energy by cooling many of the buildings in downtown Toronto. It sounds pretty unusual but basically the cold lake water is taken through a cooling system and them upon becoming warm dumped back into the cities water system.
Based on consumption, water flow measurement is taken and the citizens are billed for their usage. This energy alternative has cut down the amount of electrical use in Ontario since the cooling system only uses about one tenth of the energy consumed when operated by electric. This process also removed almost 100,000 annual tons of carbon monoxide from the atmosphere which was previously deposited when traditional cooling methods were used.
It seems we could learn from the citizens of Toronto and start utilizing our resources in a way that will help preserve other assets. Each year there are more and more creative ways to use flow meters and other types of mass air flow meters to meet the demands of our environment.
