Support Efficient, Earth-Friendly Companies

By spending your money on one product or another, you are in effect choosing to support one business over another.  That’s why I often like to consider the pros and cons of a company before I buy their product.

For instance, just the other day my husband and I were at a bookstore, and we saw a calender that was made of recycled paper.  On the back of the calender, it actually listed all of the resources the company has saved by using recycled paper, from trees to the energy it takes to turn wood into paper.  It was an impressive list, and convinced me to buy the calender, even though I didn’t really even need a calender or plan on buying one during that trip.

Another example is choosing to buy from companies that boast highly efficient or “green” factories.  This can often be accomplished by using ultrasonic flowmeters, or a mass flow control system that enables very precise control over the rate of flow.

At the very least, you may want to use your consumer dollars as leverage, and avoid buying products from blatantly wasteful or environmentally destructive.  For instance, there are reports of Wal-Mart deliberately dumping chemicals and polluting local waterways. For that and other reasons, such as the labor practices the company is known for both in the United States and in China, I refuse to shop at Wal-Mart.

As a consumer, your opinion counts.  Every dollar you spend is kind of like a vote, so you get to “vote” however often you go to the store and buy something.  Put some thought into your purchases and make those votes count!
