Renting vs. Owning a Boat
By jRev in Sports | 0 comments
Owning a boat is a dream for many people, but it’s also something you should consider very carefully before you take the plunge. Here are a few questions to ask yourself.
- How often are you going to use the boat? If you are only able to go out on the lake a couple of times a season, it would be much more cost effective just to rent a boat for those times. Even if you plan to take the occasional boating vacation, consider renting if that will be the only time you ever use your boat.
- Are you prepared to be responsible for maintaining a boat? A boat will require regular maintenance and the occasional repair, so you’ll need to take it into the shop periodically and buy boat engine parts and other marine supplies as needed. You’ll probably need to have it checked out before you take it out for the first time every season.
- Do you have a vehicle that can tow the boat? Do you have access to a place to take your boat? Obviously, you also need to have the means to enjoy your boat. This means being able to tow it places — you probably don’t want to have to buy a whole new vehicle in order to get something with towing capacity. And you also ought to have access to a nearby lake or reservoir where boating is allowed, so that you have someplace close by to take your boat to.
Obviously there are a lot of things to consider before getting a boat. It’s not like going cycling on the weekends — it’s a hobby that requires money, maintenance, and a certain level of dedication in order to ensure you take full advantage of having a boat.
