Although other smartphones are growing in popularity, the iPhone currently remains the most popular smartphone on the market. As near field communication becomes increasingly popular, the iPhone will be an important player in the new technology.
What is Near Field Communication?
Near Field Communication is a method of wireless communication. It allows two devices to “talk” to each other when they are in a short distance of one another.
What will Near Field Communication Mean for iPhone?
Some of the things that people will be able to do with their iPhones as Near Field Communication becomes more common include:
- Make mobile payments. You will be able to swipe your iPhone over a payment processing system at various stores and the phone will act as a debit card. This is something that is starting to kick off around the world and will be more and more common in the upcoming years.
- Open locks with your mobile phone. You will be able to swipe your iPhone over the lock to your apartment or office and have the lock recognize the phone. Instead of using a key, you will use your phone to enter these places. In fact, some hotels are starting to offer this option for getting into your room without checking in at the lobby.
- Control your MacBook from your iPhone. Apple devices will be linked to one another through Near Field Communication. You’ll be able to control your MacBook from your iPhone. It is possible that you will eventually be able to control other devices in the room such as your television as the wireless technology advances.

I like the idea that the mobile phone will be able to open locks and I don’t have to carry my keys around.
