The Importance of a Millimeter

The key to good aerial photography is to use a digital camera that is made to capture even the minutest detail. With things like aerial mapping, something as small as a millimeter on the screen can represent several feet that need to be accounted for when planning the development of a particular area.
Logically this makes sense, but in practice it is far easier said than done. When the plane is hovering over some area, it is far more difficult for the brain to wrap itself around the gravity of the small details. When looking down, for example, there may be a tree with no branches sitting in the middle of a field. Perhaps knowing this tree is there is important for whatever development is about to take place. But with film that does not capture this detail, the image cannot be zoomed upon, the tree will not be seen, and that important detail will be missed.
And since when you are up in the sky there is no way to know that tree is there without looking for it, having the right digital technology is vital towards ensuring it is caught on camera the first time, rather than found out when it is too late.
