Tips for Traveling with Dogs

One of the most challenging things about having dogs is going on vacation. What do you do with them while you’re gone?
Boarding is of course always an option, but it can get expensive, especially if you have more than one dog. Sometimes we solve the problem by asking a dog-loving friend to stay at our house while we’re gone, but we’ve also brought our dogs with us before on our trips.
Of course, traveling with dogs introduces a whole new set of interesting challenges. If you are staying with friends, will they be okay with having your dog tag along? And if not, you’ll need to find a hotel that allows dogs — which is sometimes difficult, especially if you have BIG dogs.
One way to find dog-friendly hotels is to do a quick search online. For instance, you can search for the phrases “Atlanta, GA hotels” and “allows dogs” for a list of related web pages. Or you can search for a specific hotel to check their pet policy on their website — for instance, by searching for “Quality Inn Phoenix airport.”
Traveling with your dogs definitely makes things more difficult, but I always liked having them along. I tend to miss my pets when I travel, so this way I at least had some of them with me!

This blog reminds me of the time we went through Tennessee to go to Graceland. We were traveling with my brother’s dog. It was hot, so we couldn’t leave the dog in the car, so we got a motel room so he could sleep inside in the air conditioning while we gawked at Elvis’s home and possessions.

There have been times when we were traveling and stopped at a hotel that didn’t take dogs, so we had to sneak the dog into the room and hope he stayed quiet.

I like taking my dog along on trips. He’s good company. But, like this blogger, I always plan ahead by finding dog-friendly hotels.

When I can, I take my dogs with me on trips. When I can’t, I leave them at home with a dog sitter. It’s best to leave them in a familiar place with the other dogs and cats.

I usually take my Rottweiler with me when I travel, but most hotels don’t want a Rottie, so I usually stay at ground-floor rooms and sneak him in when nobody’s around. He’s well-behaved, so it’s not usually a problem. Of course, if something startles him, his bark is really loud.

Fortunately for dog lovers, more and more places will take your dog. I think a lot of places will do anything to accommodate guests to be sure they’re full up.

If I’m going to stay with friends and I have my dogs along, I always make sure it’s okay with my hosts. I think that’s just basic consideration, you know?
